Many of us have been there. Dragging dirty and battered old extension cables out from the garage, running them from the house through an open door and into the garden ready for use. There is nearly always a hint of rain in the air, the cable is never quite long enough, and no matter how many warnings you give, someone always trips over the extended wire causing the mower to cut out.

But that is merely the start. You then spend time religiously dragging the cable left and right, hitting people, pets and plants and getting perilously close to cutting through it on every turn as you strive for the perfect stripes. Ring any bells? You’re in the right place.

Gone are the days when you only had limited options – electric or petrol lawnmowers. Technology has moved on with cordless battery-powered lawnmowers and garden power tools becoming more popular and providing a viable, efficient and convenient alternative – especially for hard to access gardens.

If you are considering switching from an electric or petrol mower to a cordless lawnmower, here are some things to consider:

Voltage

It is important to understand how you’ll be using your lawnmower prior to determining the voltage (V) you’ll need. A higher voltage mower, like a 60V max lawnmower for example, is an ideal replacement for a traditional petrol mower. Designed for mid to large gardens up to 800m2, it provides a heavy-duty solution, no matter what the grass length. A lower voltage 24V mower is perfect for small to medium sized lawns delivering enough power for most urban family gardens.

Run-time

The last thing you want when purchasing a cordless battery powered mower is for it to run out of power partway through a cut. Think about how long it takes to cut your lawn and then compare this to the run-time of products on offer. Depending on the specification and size of the battery, typical run times are up to 1 hour – enough for most lawns.

It is worth looking out for mowers that come with the option of a spare battery to extend run times like our 24V lawnmower. You can then charge one and use the other for an almost unlimited run time.

Charge time

Battery technology has moved on rapidly in recent years with many products now offering a fast charger, with some reducing charge times to as little as 1 hour. Ideal to charge the battery pre or post cut.

It is worth looking for products that include a built-in battery power checker so you can keep an eye on the charge.

Battery life

Lithium-ion batteries are the industry-standard go-to option for cordless lawn equipment, providing long-term reliability and low maintenance.

For additional peace of mind, it is worth finding out if it is easy to get replacement batteries to further extend the lifetime of the mower.

Mowing width

Like traditional petrol and electric mowers, cordless lawnmowers come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Mowing width is an important consideration as it can significantly reduce the time taken to mow the lawn. Smaller widths of around 30cm are ideal for small to medium sized lawns. Widths over 40cm are better for larger lawns.

Weight

If you are used to using a heavy petrol lawnmower, you will notice a big weight reduction by moving to a cordless model. Cordless mowers are typically lighter, making them easier to lift and use.

It is worth looking for a mower with good quality carry handles to facilitate this, like those included in the LawnMaster® range.
